Organic Acacia Gum: Top Health Benefits For A Healthy Lifestyle

What Is Organic Acacia Gum?

There are more than 900 Acacia tree species all over the earth, and almost all of them can produce gums.1 Organic Acacia gum is a complex polysaccharide. It is indigestible to humans.2

Organic acacia gum is full of insoluble fiber made up of oligosaccharides and glycoproteins. But depending on the makeup of its soil and the characteristics of its local climate, the gum of the acacia tree can vary in composition. Most organic acacia gum comes from Sudan and other African nations.3

Organic acacia gum dissolves in water to form several different types of low-viscosity solutions. Because of its variability, it can be used as an emulsifier, thickening agent, and flavor stabilizer in foods and dietary supplements. The textile industry, pottery industry, and cosmetics businesses also use organic acacia gum.4

Since this fiber isn’t degraded in the intestine, it can become fermented in the colon as food for short-chain fatty acids. Thus, acacia gum may contain valuable prebiotic benefits.5

History Of Organic Acacia Gum

Believe it or not, organic acacia gum is one of the oldest all-natural gums in existence. In fact, as early as 2,000 BC (the Stone Age), organic acacia gum was used as food in the regions of the Sahara and as adhesive in parts of Africa.6

There has been other ancient documentation of Acacia gum. For instance, acacia gum was used to make ink, paint, and dye in Ancient Egypt circa 2650 BC. When you think of ancient cave or tomb inscriptions or “hieroglyphs,” you can assume the pigments were bound with organic acacia gum.7

Not only that, but mummies bandages were adhered with acacia gum. Even Queen Cleopatra used organic acacia gum lipstick and ordered her dishes prepared with it.8

The World Health Organization cleared acacia gum as a safe food additive in 1969. And since the 1970s, acacia gum has been deemed a safe dietary fiber in the United States by the Food and Drug Administration.9
