What Is Grapefruit Extract?

Grapefruit, also called Citrus paradisi, is a widely cultivated citrus fruit that contains a heap of different flavonoids and nutrients. Among other bioactive compounds in grapefruit, you’ll find vitamins, carotenoids, fiber, and polyphenols.1

One of the grapefruit’s most prized phytochemicals is naringin. Another flavonoid abundant in the citrus fruit is hesperidin. Hesperidin is a major flavanone glycoside which also occurs in oranges.2

Grapefruit extract is known to contain high levels of bioactive flavanone glycosides like narirutin. The polyphenols, which reside in the fruit’s seed and peel residues, are released after the grapefruit has undergone extraction. The extract is often incorporated into food ingredients and therapeutic agents.3

History Of Grapefruit Extract

Scientists believe the grapefruit originated in Barbados in the 17th century. Locals in the West Indies were the first to consume grapefruit at home. Soon after, the fruit became a staple in American homes, too.4

In 1823, the first grapefruit trees were brought to Florida to be cultivated commercially. Like their namesakes, grapes, the grapefruit grows in clusters. Today, grapefruit seed extract is produced in two different formats: powder and liquid.5

In 1919, grapefruit extract was developed by a young Yugoslavian physicist, Dr. Jacob Harich. He was interested in immunology and studied various natural substances he felt could potentially help the human body defend itself against undesirable microorganisms. In 1963, Dr. Harich moved to Florida, the grapefruit capital of the U.S., to further research the citrus fruit and its potential benefits.6

Grapefruit trees can grow to be as tall as 20 feet high. The fruit itself can measure up to 6 inches in diameter. The pulp is often a light yellow, pink, or white. The fruit is tender, juicy, and mildly acidic.7
